Real Voices from Us

National Institute of Technology, Oita College

A: Kosen is a strange school!

B: Neither a senior high school nor a university!

C: No classroom changes for 5 years!

A: Above all, very few girls although it's a coed school!

B: Let us tell you about Oita Kosen, the ratios of girls in each department are: 28% in Civil and Environmental Engineering; 19% in Information Engineering: 4.4% in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

A: And only 2.4% in Mechanical Engineering! Too few Kosen girls! Why? What's the reason?

C: You may think this way: “What's the problem? It's quite natural!” But this way of thinking is a big problem. Although new words like Rikejo and Dobojo appeared to represent women's participation in society, most Kosen people seem to still have male-centered ways of thinking.

B: By the way, do you know a specific phenomenon seen among many Kosen boys?

A: It occurs to you because of lack of girls in the campus, making you feel all the girls around you look cuter than what they are! Yes, that's the famous Kosen-byo Disease.

B: If the disease goes on, you'll take a romantic interest not only in ordinary girls, but maybe even in older women, like dormitory mothers! As the symptoms worsen, you'll go crazy for female cartoon characters!

A: This is the most serious problem for all Kosen boys! Why? It's because girls are always the center of boys' motivation! Girls' existence is “justice”! No girls, no life!

C: Come on guys! Let's get back to our main story. The industrial world points out that such male Kosen graduates often interfere with business because they're poor at working with women even in the same company. It's because they had few chances to communicate with women in their Kosen days.

B: Originally, women are familiar with technology because they use most home appliances like fridges and washing machines. So, it's ridiculous that male engineers developing such appliances cannot have good relationships with women!

C: Most of all, many Western universities have a half of their female students studying engineering. Japan's case is abnormal! But, how can we increase female students in Kosen?

B: Before that, please imagine public images of Kosen.

C: A school of boys who are good at science!

A: A school imposing hard studies and experiments!

B: Namely, Kosen is just like a school of 3Ds: Dirty, Dangerous, and Demeaning!

A: The same as 3Ks, which girls hate the most!

B&C: Yes!

B: Reforming the present Kosen from inside so that girls want to enter will be the first step to changing. Today we will present 3 solutions from Kosen students' viewpoints. “It's a special project of the Kosen students,

A: By the Kosen students,

C: And for the Kosen students!”

A: Our first proposal is: “Let's make cute Kosen uniforms!”

Some Kosens have high-quality uniforms made by famous designers; and others don't care about uniform design.

B: Oita Kosen girls' uniforms are like this: dark blue blazer, skirt, and white blouse. Too simple!

A: It looks like our Kosen has no interest in girls. Such uniforms cannot attract them!

B: But, designing a new college uniform costs a lot; and not realistic.

C: That's why, with just a little twist... How about adding ribbons, ties, or scarfs to the official uniform and letting girls customize it? Plain uniforms can be made attractive at a low cost. Likewise, even work clothes can be made fashionable; like this. Enjoying fashion is also necessary for work clothes.

A: Now everyone. Do you know that a school uniform is one of the main factors for junior high school girls to decide their future high school? For that reason, attracting girls' minds with a cute uniform is our first priority. Of course, seeing girls in a cute uniform is a feast for boy's eyes!

B: Our next proposal is: “Let's make a girls' lunch in the cafeteria!”
Look at this. See? The meals are definitely made for hungry boys; not for girls!

A: Such meals make girls feel that Kosen is not girl-friendly! A lunch for them is like something from a fancy café!

B: Exactly. But, such a café lunch will not be accepted because the school cafeteria serves well-balanced healthy meals at a low price.

C: That's why, with just a little twist… How about changing the size of this huge dish by half, and adding a salad instead?

A: One more thing. Girls have a second stomach! They always have room for sweets.

C: Yes, sweets are as important as scientific calculators for Kosen girls, too. Naturally, cakes and chocolates are good, but serving them at the cafeteria is not realistic. So how about serving healthy fruits? Now, the girls' lunch is complete!

A: Then, the cafeteria will be crowded with girls, and it'll become an oasis for boys!

C: Our last proposal is: “Let's open a home economics class in Kosen!”
Kosen boys have a great advantage over girls in number: they can decide everything by majority vote, like what to do in the next experiment. Girls are always under stressful situations.

A: In this situation, Kosen cannot be called gender equal! We should add a required subject like home economics so that numerically disadvantageous girls can take initiatives over boys.

B: But, most of you may feel home economics at Kosen is quite out of place.

C: That's why, with just a little twist… How about creating home economics with chemical and technological viewpoints, like cooking sweets using principles of chemistry?

B: Yes. Cooking is chemistry: baking, boiling, and frying are all chemical reactions. Even that famous MIT offers a class called “Kitchen Chemistry”, where students can learn chemistry through cooking and enjoy eating 100% delicious meals cooked by the chemical principles.

C: Moreover, boys in the class will get new ideas as future engineers by using home appliances through the women's eyes.

A: Cooking girls' favorite sweets and dishes with them is the best chance for boys to know girls' minds and improve good communication skills. In this way, both the Kosen-byo Disease and girls' stress can be resolved at once! It's a win-win situation!

C: Overall, Kosen's strong image of being a boys' school is hidden all around campus.

B: The National Institute of Technology took a new approach to ensure at least 30% of girls in all Kosens. But, unfortunately the ratio of girls has remained as low as 17% for the last ten years.

C: Here is a proverb: “If we want to change a situation, we should change ourselves first.”

A: If we want to get more girls at Kosen, we should first change our male-centered ways of thinking from inside Kosen, and fix the problems which are taken for granted. These are the real voices from us,(ABC:) Kosen students!

ABC: Send more girls to Kosen, please!!!
