The Essentials for Engineers

Kagoshima National College of Technology

A: Hello, everyone! Let me introduce our team members with the best teamwork.First of all, I am Chisa Muroya, the leader of our team, a 5th-year student of Information Engineering Course. Next, this is Haruka Kawamata, a 4th-year student of Information Engineering Course. Lastly, this is Seiya Takami, a 4th-year student of Urban Environmental Design and Engineering Course. Two years ago we all attended the English Speech Contest. We practiced together, and cooperated with each other. As a result we were awarded and our hard work paid off. I thought the best teamwork gave us the good result. The other day we discussed the essentials for engineers including teamwork. Haruka, can you list them up?

B: Ok. 9 essential elements came to our mind. 1.teamwork 2.hobby & specialty 3.communication ability 4.general and expert knowledge 5.mental & physical strength 6.engineering ethics 7.interest 8.problem solving ability and, 9.the way of thinking.

C: We decided to analyze these elements individually and considered why they are important for engineers.

A: First, I would like to talk about, teamwork, hobby & specialty, and communication ability. The reason why teamwork is needed for engineers is that it improves the capability of each person and makes the team powerful. Each member might focus on different task, but the most important thing is everybody's working together to achieve the same goal. Hobby and specialty is also important. As a convenient substitute tool for language ability, it could help us clear cultural hurdles and misunderstanding. Most of all it will make it easier to become friends with people in foreign countries. Communication ability is absolutely indispensable. Understanding each other is very difficult even among Japanese. It's more difficult for those who are from different cultural backgrounds. Every time I had a chance to communicate with foreign students in Japan and abroad, I wondered how I should communicate with them. Though it may not be my final answer, I found a solution that is from a book my English teacher recommended me to read. These are the words from Mahatma Gandhi, ‘I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.' I was greatly impressed by his words. Do you understand his words? I understand he wants to say that we should have generosity to respect not only others but ourselves. Next, Haruka, it's your turn.

B: Ok, I would like to talk about general & expert knowledge, mental & physical strength, and engineering ethics. General and expert knowledge is important. It is the basis of engineers and can create new products by combining with knowledge. Mental and physical strength is also important for us to work in our and other countries. We should be prepared for every hardship mentally and physically. Engineering ethics is the most important element, I believe. First, let me define engineering ethics. When engineers develop various products, it is the standard to make judgments adequately if the products harm or injure the consumers. By the way, can you guess how many accidents were caused due to the lack of engineering ethics in Japan until now? 15 accidents! Can you believe it? Some consumers were killed and others were hurt both mentally and physically. The worst is that many companies tried to hide these facts and neglected to solve the situation. Why did it happen? Lacking the significance of engineering ethics would be the main reason. The most important for engineers is consumer-friendly concept. Engineers should not make profits by neglecting consumers. As soon as we notice that those products do harm to consumers, we should stop the production and deal with the problems. Next, Seiya, it's your turn.

C: Ok, I would like to pick up the last three elements: interest, problem solving ability, and the way of thinking. To have a lively interest in everything is an important element for engineers, too. I think engineers should respect fundamental techniques, and also learn the newest and latest techniques to keep up with the current topics of the world. The problem solving ability is important because every engineer will face both minor and major problems sometimes in the future. We should be able to solve them with better and newer inventions. When encountering a situation like this, the classification of problem solving, quoted from IWEL is very useful. The hardest thing is only 5 %.The way of thinking is absolutely necessary to produce new products but very difficult to acquire. Today I would like to introduce you an interesting way of thinking and it will help you a lot. It is called “TRIZ”, developed in Russia. There are 40 principles for invention. Unfortunately I only have time to explain one, “Division”. This is a pencil. It is a tool to write something. But when we divide it into two, wood and lead, they can have different functions. For example, first, we can turn on the light with lead. Second, we can make a gorgeous necklace with wood to make a lady happy. Third, we can make a straw to blow soap bubbles with wood to make a girl happy. Lastly, we can make dice with wood. In this way we can break a fixed idea by dividing a thing into something.

A: Everyone, did you understand our analysis and explanation? Ok, let's review the essentials for engineers. I have three elements: teamwork, hobby & specialty, and communication ability. How about you, Haruka?

B: Mine is general & expert knowledge, mental & physical strength and engineering ethics. How about you, Seiya?

C: I have three: interest, problem solving ability, and the way of thinking.

A: We would like to lead a significant campus life to acquire the essentials for engineers we presented today before becoming actual engineers. We aim to become ideal engineers to make our dream come true. I'd like to thank you very much again for giving us a chance to make this presentation and thank you for your attention.
