Western Toilets

TANIGUCHI, Seigi (Niihama National College of Technology)

Everyone, I like Japanese Western toilets. They are wonderful. Let me explain.

First, they have sophisticated functions. For example, they have high-tech bidets, known as “washlets,” and heated toilet seats. Washlets wash your hips, so you can keep your hips clean all the time. Heated toilet seats warm your hips up when you use restrooms. Thanks to this function, we can keep our bellies warm even when it is cold.

Second, it is free of charge. I heard that in some countries, people are charged to use toilets. I was surprised when I heard it.

Third, Japanese Western toilets give us perfectly private space. I believe that this is the most important thing.

Please listen, everyone. Living in this world is hard for us. We cannot avoid meeting others as long as we live. Even if we try to live smartly, we may offend others. If we are very sympathetic or too emotional, our lives cannot be too easy. If we stick to our own ways of living, we must feel other people who live in this world are too petty-minded. In short, we sometimes need to be alone, but it is hard to be alone.

It is the time to reach the door of your favorite bathroom. Enter the space and close the door. Open the cover and sit down on the toilet seat. Amazing. Nobody disturbs you. You are perfectly alone. Now, you have a perfectly private space. It is wonderful, isn’t it? I strongly believe so.

I think that a bathroom is a philosophical space. It is quiet and you can feel relaxed while you are sitting there. Is there any better place?

I have a lot of troubles. Sometimes, I struggle with my problems and feel sad. It is when I want to ponder on things alone. If I am in my house, I can stay inside my room. However, I have no time to be alone because I live in a dormitory and I need to take care of younger students.

On such an occasion, Japanese Western toilets help me. I stay for a long time in the bathroom whenever I have a trouble. My friends who saw me there call me “the fairy of the toilet.” You may not understand what I mean, but my friends know what I mean to say.

When you go to the bathroom, please remember my speech sometime and feel the goodness. When you can feel it, you will become one of “the fairies of the toilet.”
