A DILEMMA

Matsue National College of Technology

Please note – this presentation is in the form of a conversation – so it is rather difficult to send you a coherent script. We have done our best and presented the opposite sides of the debate as concepts 1 and 2.

You all know about the global environmental crisis. You hear about it so often that the bad news has become almost boring. We think that this is a big part of the problem.
So many things are going wrong that we have stopped worrying. The world is suffering from environmental crisis fatigue.

We have come here today to ask you to think seriously about what must be done. Our world is threatened by the actions of men but man seems to be only playing with solutions and the effects are minimal. To have any real, positive impact, we have to recognize the real cause of the problem.
It’s the over-use and the misuse of the world’s resources.
We have to use less energy. Care for our water and our air.
Exercise restraint in the use of all natural resources.
The only way to achieve these outcomes is through a radical change in life style.

We have a problem. We have identified the cause. We know what outcome we need. The dilemma is how to achieve that outcome.
What should this new lifestyle be like? We couldn't agree when we wrote this presentation and we can't agree now. We have two different points of view. Satoshi and Kazuki both want the same outcomes, the same destination – but they have very different travel plans.
Concept 1
Let me explain my concept. The way to reduce impact on the environment is to stay home. You will reduce demands on infrastructure, use less energy and contribute a lot less pollution by using technology. The 24 inch screen on your desk will be your portal to the world
Concept 2
The way to achieve an environmentally safe future is to return to traditional values, a slow life. Communities would be almost self sufficient for food and energy. There would be less infrastructure, and a lot less pollution. We’ll only use modern technology for what we need.

So we have the same destination – different routes. Two different visions of what our future society should be like.

SOCIAL UNITS
Concept 1
Kazuki’s basic social unit is the individual, or at most, the nuclear family. A social unit with access to the entire world.
Concept 2
Satoshi believes that the best society will be extended families contributing to local communities.

EDUCATION
Concept 1
Imagine the education you could have with access to the best minds and the best educators in the world. Becoming an international specialist. We wouldn’t just play at e-learning – we would live it.
Concept 2
It takes a village to educate a child. My idea is community education where everyone takes part in the learning process. I wouldn’t have so much specialization. I think the work force should be multi-skilled. The workers within a community should be able to perform almost any task required.

TRANSPORT
This was one area where Satoshi’s and Kazuki’s ideas coincided to some degree. We must reduce the impacts of transport
Concept 1
In my world as many as 60 or 70% of jobs could be done without ever leaving the house. No commuting, no international travel. No demands on transport infrastructure.
And don’t forget – in the techno future, we won’t need anything like as much transport.
.Also very few office buildings, no schools, no shops
Concept 2
Private transport must totally disappear. Eco friendly public transit systems will take over.
SHOPPING, FOOD AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
Concept 1
We don’t need shops now. Is there anyone in this room who hasn’t bought something on the Internet?
Concept 2
Internet shopping would be a bad idea. Think of the impact of food miles. Not just “food miles” – “all product” miles.
The way to go is locally produced food and other products
In my future there will be shops, schools, office blocks – not too many, I hope. But buildings will be valued and not replaced.
We’ll maintain and modify the building stock – We’ll have long term planting programs and use local building materials. Of course nothing will be wasted. Did you know that 10% of the greenhouse gases released globally comes from food that is wasted?
That’s 5 times the total emissions from the airline industry.
Not only that but huge amounts of water are required to produce that wasted food.
Concept 1
Not in my world – high efficiency agriculture – mega farms. All meals bought in prep-prepared.
Concept 2
And that would be healthy?

As we’ve said all along – same destination – different travel plans.

TRAVEL AND LEISURE
Concept 1
I wish you would stop saying travel plans – I wouldn’t travel anywhere. I’d vacation in virtual reality – I’d have my Wii for exercise and chat with my friends all over the world
Concept 2
Community festivals, sports, cycling trips, rowing, walking! It would be great.

SUMMARY
We have exaggerated our positions to make a point.
We must make radical lifestyle changes if we want future generations to enjoy this planet.
What route would you choose to reach the desired outcome?
Whatever your opinion, whatever your travel plans – we think we should all be guided by these words.
“Nature is a great economist. She makes no mistakes. The fittest to survive are those best able to live with her, and to be content with a little.”
Lafacdio Hearn, January 27, 1894

Wise Words.
Why did no one listen then?
Why is no one listening now?
