Brightness We Face: With an Action JUST THIS
Yonago National College of Technology
N) The goldfish are swimming. They swim calmly and leisurely.
H) The goldfish are swimming. They move restlessly and quickly.
K) There are some differences between these two.
H) Hello, everyone. I’m Hiraga Katsumi.
N) Nice to meet you. My name is Naitoh Seika.
K) I’m Kobayashi Shuhei. Just enjoy!
N) The title of our presentation is ‘Brightness We Face.’
H) Of course, the light is a useful item that makes up safety and comfort.
K) However, some problems are around us in the recent ways of using light.
All) Let’s look for them, and see how to solve them!
N) The movies that we showed you first were parts of the results of an experiment over a span of six days. We watched the differences how the goldfish move under the white light and the red light for the whole three nights. As a result, they moved more quickly under the red LED light than under the white light. They moved up and down.
H) As you see, living things are sensitive to the environment of light. In this picture, for example, we can see a big difference in the rice plants’ growth with the artificial brightness: The rice under the shade is growing better than the one under the artificial light. The lights of buildings confuse migratory birds so that they will not be able to fly in the correct direction. Recently we cannot hear the songs by frogs nor see dim flickers by fireflies.
K) Light has a major influence also upon humans. The bright advertisements by the roads cause many traffic accidents. There is a theory that we even come near to the cancer if we are bathed in lights when we’re sleeping.
N) We call this problem ‘Hikarigai,’ or Light Pollution. This is an ecosystem problem, a common nuisance, which causes the problems of resources.
K) KOSEN students, especially those related to industrial engineering, have to think much about this problem. It is also an energy problem, not only an ecosystem one.
H) This street lamp is one of the ‘glove-typed.’ From the light of this type, the ray comes into our eyes directly so that we will feel glared. It’s dangerous if we are driving. Not only that. The upper side of the lamp is covered with the clear glass, so about 40% of the ray give off light to the sky unnecessarily. We are using only 60% of energy!
K) How was the energy made up? With firing fossils. We have few fossil fuels anymore. Can we waste them?
N) In the powerhouse, technicians and engineers, including KOSEN graduates, are exerting themselves in order to increase efficiency for only 2 or 3 %. But the energy produced in this way is wasted with an action JUST THIS.
H) It costs money to use electricity. Let’s think of tax. The tax we pay for is used to lighten the national roads. About 40% of energy is sent out to the dark sky. Yes, the bad lightening is wasting our hard-earned tax money.
N) Of course, we don’t have to turn off the necessary lights. It is important to evaluate the importance of that light.
K) We only have to think over three important points: ‘area to illuminate,’ ‘time to lighten,’ and ‘brightness to use.’ We can use more energy than now with an action JUST THIS. This is the problem that the KOSEN students can lead people to solve.
H) Students interested in Light Pollution at Yonago National College of Technology are working on the activity to decrease Light Pollution. The song you’re listening to is a symbolic song of this activity. The title of this song is “Hoshizora wo Torimodose!” which means ‘Get Back the Stars!’ in English. The lyrics were written by Mr. Iwamoto Naoki and the music was composed by Mr. Yasugi Takenori. It means this song is a completely original song by the students of our school. After finishing creating this song in Japanese, it was used in many places to let people think about this problem.
N) We thought it is important to let the foreigners think about this problem, so we translated this song into English by the help of our English teacher for an international exchange festival held in October 2012 on the permission of these two copyrighters.
K) What did the listeners think of our song after listening? Let’s watch the comments. First, we interviewed Ms. Serena Lai from Australia.
VH) Thank you for listening.
VI1) Thank you very much! It was a very nice song.
VH) Did you understand what this song means?
VI1) I think so. As those say, to get back the stars.
VH) Yes.
VI1) I think the melody and the lyrics are very pretty, and pities really match the song. So I think it’s really nice.
VH) Thank you. What will you do on listening?
VI1) What will I do after listening?
VH) Yeah.
VI1) Mmm. Maybe…, maybe turn off the lights…. Yeah, unnecessary lights.
N) We also interviewed Ms. Nancy Imade from Australia.
VI2) Yeah, I can understand that it’s important to reduce Light Pollution. Recently, we are changing the light bulbs in our house to LED type.
VH) Ah, nice activity. Yeah.
H) Asking them to listen to the song within five minutes seems to have been achieved with a great efficiency. Finally it was a success with an action JUST THIS.
N) Then, remember. What is the subtitle of this presentation? (To K)
K) It is ‘With an Action JUST THIS.’ (To N)
N) Right. The reason this continues happening is only that people don’t know about this problem. They don’t know that they can contribute to the environmental problems with a few actions. It means some word-of-mouth information can lead us to solve this problem.
H) The power of KOSEN is very big for this activity. We can approach this problem with our specialty: engineering, biology, architecture and so on. Why don’t you solve this big problem together?
All) Get back the stars seen in the sky to keep up the hope for tomorrow we live in! Get rid of the wastes of the brightness we use to protect the bright future we all would have!
N) Please notice, look over, and act for this problem.
K) Please tell your family and friends about this.
H) In order to be able to watch the beautiful stars all over the sky in the world, we shall continue our activities.
All) Thank you!
